Beautiful spot to see the coast of the north island. You can walk around to see coves east and west of the viewpoint. The trail is packed dirt behind Red Rocks restaurant- they charge $2 USD for entry per person. Well worth the fee. The gorge is within Red Rocks- you descend via steps carved into the soil.

This is somewhat difficult to review. It is a gorge cut into the red rocks by the sea, no doubt over many years. Access is somewhat difficult, but, if you know where to look, there are steps cut into the rocks to get into the gorge. It is interesting and definitely worth seeing if you are already at Red Rocks, but not worth going to Red Rocks specifically to see. There is a very narrow low passage at one point in the gorge leading to a chamber which can be accessed by crawling/stooping, but this is somewhat advanced and challenging. The chamber itself may be more impressive, but I did not attempt to access it.

Nice place once you are there. Bartender was great. The locals on the way up did not seem happy to have visitors and the parking is limited. Beautiful lunar landscape once you’re out of the trees.
