This place is unreal, and totally doable with kids-we took our 7 and 9 year old boys who are great swimmers. Lots of cliff jumping at many different levels into deep water (at least when we went yesterday) The rock formations and river running through take your breath away-I enjoyed just sitting and taking in the scenery as much as I enjoyed swimming in the refreshing water and jumping in from the rocks. We went on a Sunday, arriving around 11-it was pretty empty! Come 2-3pm teenagers started rolling in and smoking lots of weed. Earlier is best with families for sure-weekdays probably even better.
Getting there: doable without a tour or a guide! Follow the directions on Google Maps. You’ll first come to a sign that says “Rio” and points down and to the left, and group of houses on the right that charge $5 for parking on their property, which is where we parked (see photo). If you were to drive down and to the left at the Rio sign, the road will turn from blacktop to white concrete, and there are maybe 5-6 spots along the concrete road along right side. Beware that after these spots, the concrete road/path dips down steep and this is where you should not drive without a 4x4. (See photos).
We have been to PR countless times and this may be the highlight of all we have seen. Simply amazing!

3 cave experiences all next to each other absolutely stunning landscape. You can do all three in a line if you plan it correctly.

Cave, Waterfall and River Adventures was spectacular. We had the best tour guides - Jean and Kenyon. Swimming in the cave and jumping off 6’ - 15’ and 30’ rock formations into the river was such a blast. Scenery was so beautiful. Very challenging on the climbing if you wanted to do everything. Pushed the fear factor if you wanted to do something super adventurous.
The pick up spot at AC Hotel parking in San Juan was a little bit of a hassle and then you drive another 30-40min. Plan 1/2 day - extra driving time to the pick up place, but it’s worth it. Make sure to wear hiking sandals or closed water shoes and swim suits. You will be swimming and diving into the water a lot. There were not bugs in the forest because the fruit bats eat them - they are in the caves. Bring a dry pair of shorts and shirt and towel to leave in the car for when you get back if you don’t want to drive 40min all wet.
It was such a blast and very worth it. Look them up.

We booked the swimming cave tour through Trip advisor and we're absolutely amazed! We were swimming through subterranean caves, jumping off cliffs, and having a wonderful time. Our guide was simply amazing, so, if you decide that you're going to brave a really great tour , make sure you ask for Airam, who was born and raised in the area and knows trails like the back of his hand! We had a wonderful time and would do it again when we go back to Puerto Rico!

Definitely don't go down to the bottom with your car. Even with 4x4 drive when it rains, the road is very slippery. We were lucky to be pulled up by a local assisting with tours, but when we tried giving him $40 to thank him, he extorted us for $100 and wouldn't move his truck until we paid him. Better to pay the $5 or find other parking at the top. Otherwise, a really cool spot to check out. Also, a dry bag is recommended.
