We visited Fort Amsterdam and it ended up being one of those simple but rewarding stops that is absolutely worth your time.
The views alone make the visit. Sitting between Great Bay and Little Bay, you get sweeping panoramas in both directions, with Philipsburg on one side and open Caribbean views on the other. It is one of the best vantage points on the island and gives you a real sense of the geography and history all at once.
Getting there is fairly straightforward, but good to know ahead of time. You will park near or just outside the Divi Little Bay Resort entrance and then walk in from there. From the parking area, it is about a short walk up toward the fort.
The final stretch is a bit of a climb. It is not long, but the path is rocky, uneven, and slightly steep in sections, so decent shoes help. Think of it as a short uphill walk rather than a hike, but you will feel it a bit, especially in the heat.
Once at the top, you will find the remains of the 17th-century Dutch fort, originally built in 1631. It is mostly ruins now, but the setting, the history, and the views make it well worth the effort.
A quick visit, but one that really adds depth to your time in Sint Maarten.
We hope they will clean the place up in the future and maybe add a nice place to eat at or have a drink.

Very easy and quick hike from the hotel at Divi Little Bay Resort. Views are beautiful. When exploring also stop by the pelican nesting area, to the right of the trail head, you will see 1/2 dozen of pelicans and cactii growing off the cliffs.

This is located on the outside edge of the property for the Divi resort. That means you need to park outside the guardhouse and walk in.
The walk is downhill to the resort, then uphill through the resort's room buildings. When you reach the edge of the property it is up a steeper part for about .1 miles to the ruins.
There is a wall on the west side with cannon replicas. They are very good. Pretty much everything else has been destroyed by the hurricane that came through in 2017.
There are signs that show a layout of how the fort looked. There are 2 building shells that you can look at.
The views from the fort are beautiful and there is a pelican nesting area adjacent to the fort property. We didn't see any when we were there.
Even with the steep walk, and warm temperatures, the breeze was nice, which helped. Overall, it was nice to see.

Neat place, great view of the town and the bay. Totally free and you can drive up very close to the stairs to the Fort.

The fort ruins were my favorite thing I did in St Maarten. If the main boardwalk and the crowds aren’t your thing, consider grabbing some food and heading up here for some great views and quiet.
I took a taxi from the center of Phillipsburg for $10 USD, which drops you right at Divi resort. From there, it’s about a 10 minute walk to the ruins, and resort staff are happy to point you in the right direction. There are a few signs describing the fort and its history , but don’t expect anything super detailed.
I walked downhill back to town, which is about 1-1.5 miles. It’s a 2.5 mile walk from here back to the cruise ship dock (took me about 55 minutes total). Highly recommend!!
