The Gros Piton Nature Trail was a great hike and a must-do if you're into hiking and adventure. The trail is well marked with plenty of wooden guide posts and railings along the way, making it easy to stay on course.
The last quarter of the hike is definitely the toughest section—steep, rocky, and involving a fair amount of scrambling—but that's also what makes reaching the summit so rewarding. There are benches at each quarter mark, which are great spots to catch your breath and enjoy the views.
One of the funniest moments was seeing a local guy hiking up toward the top in sandals while casually smoking a joint—definitely a reminder that some people make this mountain look way easier than it is!
For me, this hike was absolutely worth it. The views, the challenge, and the overall experience were fantastic. I'll be back to tackle Petit Piton next. Highly recommended for anyone looking for one of the best hiking experiences in St. Lucia.

(02/2026) It’s important to mention at the beginning that this trail is mainly about the feeling of standing on top of the iconic Gros Piton.
What we personally found difficult to understand is the mandatory guide policy. The trail to the summit is not technical or particularly dangerous. The path is clearly defined, well marked, and bordered — it’s practically impossible to get lost. We understand that local authorities may want to manage visitor flow, but the fee of 50 USD per person for a roughly four-hour round trip feels very high for what is offered.
The trail itself is not especially scenic for most of the way. You walk on a rocky forest path, and apart from two viewpoints at roughly one-quarter and halfway up, there are limited views. The summit view is nice, but note that it overlooks the flatter southern part of the island.
💡One important tip: about five minutes before reaching the summit, there is a small, less visible path to the left. It leads through rainforest for about 10 minutes (some rocks can be slippery, so caution is needed), but at the end there is a beautiful view of Petit Piton and the surrounding mountains. We recommend asking your guide about this viewpoint to make sure you don’t miss it.
The hike itself can be completed without difficulty by an average, reasonably fit person. However, we strongly recommend starting as early as possible due to heat and humidity. We arrived at 6:45 am, met the first available guide, and started at 7:00 am. The ascent took about 2 hours at a comfortable pace with two short breaks, and the descent about 1.5 hours without stops. By 10:30 am, the southwest side is already fully exposed to the sun. The main challenge of this hike is not the elevation gain, but the heat and humidity.
💵 Price per person (foreigners): 50 USD / 125 EC$.
💵 Price for locals: Adult 62,5 EC$ / child 55 EC$.

This was the most exhilarating challenge I've done in my life. I had a great tour guide, Alvin, who actually let me venture ahead without him as he caught up later on. There are plenty of railings to hold onto, and as arduous as the path is, the views on the way up, especially when you get to the top, makes it all worth it. I was able to do the whole trek up and down in just over 2 hours, which I'm proud of. Definitely a must do, if you're looking to challenge yourself in the best way possible, both physically & mentally.

Ok, one heck of a (strenuous) hike, but well worth the accomplishment, the views along the way and especially at the top. The second half of the trail was steep but it was all in the shade and there was a constant breeze so even on a 90 degree day it was nice (but definitely still the most challenging). On the day we did the trail about a third of the folks turned back at the halfway point, my 65 year old knees held up all the way to the top and back. (Of course the leg massages we had afterwards at our most excellent resort (Stonefield) were a wonderful way to recover). We rented walking poles at the start of the trail and they helped (as did using the railings that were in some places). About 30% is a dirt trail, the rest you are climbing up boulders and rocks. I can’t image doing this in the rain! Our guide, Chad, was very encouraging, fun and went at OUR pace!!! Total time for us was just under 5 hours.

We did the Gros Piton Nature trail today and absolutely LOVED it. It was such a great way to spend half the day and do something active and adventurous whilst at the Pitons. The views at the halfway point and the summit are equally as stunning as each other- just of different sides of thenisland. It’s challenging for sure and involves a lot of scrambling over rocks, but for us, this made it a lot of fun. The heat made it feel hard so definitely go as early as you can. We started at 7.30 and it was worth the early start. Just take plenty of water and take your time, and wear proper trainers (not sandals!) We were so lucky that we had Suanne as our guide. She was so lovely and had a great sense of humour which made the whole thing even more fun! The cats at the rest points are so sweet and appreciated us cupping water in our hands to give them a little drink. It’s worth taking a little extra water for this alone! A brilliant experience here in Soufri
