I am writing to formally express my concern regarding an unpleasant customer service experience at the Foodland location across from the market on Halifax Street. I visited the store to collect my mother’s shopping bags, which she had previously left at the baggage claim department. Foodland has a long-established policy that allows customers to leave their bags at baggage claim and receive a ticket for later collection. On this occasion, my mother urgently needed to shop but had too many bags to carry. She therefore asked a staff member at the baggage claim department if she could leave her bags there and have me collect them later. She was clearly informed by a staff member that this was allowed. She was also granted permission to take the baggage ticket with her, with the understanding that I could collect the bags and the ticket would either be returned at a later date or replaced when I arrived. This arrangement was made directly with a Foodland employee. When I arrived to collect the bags, I was met with significant resistance from a staff member, who stated that I could not receive the bags without the ticket and suggested that I could be attempting to steal them. While I understand and respect the need for security, I calmly explained the instructions that had been given to my mother. I was then told that I would need to call my mother to verify the contents of the bags, which I did without hesitation. After this, a supervisor was brought in and spoke directly with my mother by phone. At that point, I reasonably believed the issue had been resolved. However, I was informed that the supervisor needed to locate the original staff member who had given my mother permission. I waited for approximately 5 to10 minutes while the supervisor walked past me several times without any communication. Eventually, another manager arrived and greeted me by saying, “I have good news and bad news, which would you like first? He then proceeded to say he will not be able to give me the bags because i do not have the ticket so i should return when i have obtain the ticket” This was both unprofessional and inappropiate despite the fact that my mother had fully verified the contents and was acting on instructions provided by a Foodland employee. While I have no issue with security protocols being upheld, this situation highlights a serious breakdown in customer service, communication, and accountability. I have spent several years training customer service professionals across three different islands, and this interaction was a clear example of how such matters should not be handled. Customers should not be penalized for following instructions given by staff, nor should they be treated with suspicion or dismissed without proper care and respect. I am also concerned that I may have been treated differently based on my appearance, as I was dressed casually that day. Regardless of attire, every customer deserves courtesy, professionalism, and fair treatment. I hope this matter is taken seriously and used as an opportunity to improve staff training and customer service standards at this location. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
