Whilst the supermarket itself is generally well stocked, at least one member of their checkout staff was certainly not well stocked in good manners. I took a bottle of bubbly off the shelf at 45bbd, but when checking out, I was abruptly told 52bbd. When I challenged it, her response was, and I quote, I have scanned it and you have to pay this price. Well, some people may accept the defeat, given that the express lane I was in had started to grow rapidly, but this girl had chosen the wrong person here, and the battle was on. I won't bore you with the 10 minutes of dispute, but she had to concede when overridden by a superior, who kindly corrected my bill. My message to the girl on the till, in the Holetown store, who's false nails were so long ,she had to hold her hand 6 inches from the screen to tap in the transaction, would be to have some respect. Even if you are having a bad day, deal with the situation with courtesy. I hope the rest of your day went well, and that you didn't annoy too many other customers. I left the store a happy man, in the knowledge that I got a bottle of bubbly for the advertised price. See you soon.😊

Excellent supermarket. They helped me with a return/exchange and were very nice about it. The store is clean, organized, friendly staff, and a great selection. Shopping at Massy Stores Sunset Crest is always easy and stress-free. Highly recommend!

Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Unprofessional Conduct at Massey Supermarket – Holetown, Barbados
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding a deeply disappointing and unacceptable experience at the Massey Supermarket in Holetown, Barbados.
I am a regular customer at this location and spend a significant amount of money there weekly. As it is the primary supermarket in my area and offers one of the better product selections locally, I have remained a loyal customer despite ongoing concerns about pricing and produce quality. However, the level of service I have recently experienced has compelled me to escalate this matter.
On two separate occasions, I approached a young female employee who was stocking shelves to ask where a particular item could be located. Both times, her response and body language were dismissive and openly hostile. She rolled her eyes, appeared visibly annoyed, and behaved as though I was inconveniencing her by simply asking for assistance. While she did eventually direct me to the product, her demeanor was unprofessional and disrespectful.
This morning, I encountered the same employee again. Given the prior interactions, I approached her calmly and asked for her name, as I intended to submit a formal complaint to customer experience. Her response was, and I quote, “Why are you talking to me? You’re not supposed to be talking to me unless you’re asking for a product.” When I requested her name, she refused, stating, “No, I’m not giving you my name.” She then said she would report me to management.
I agreed and accompanied her to management. Unfortunately, the sub-manager immediately took her side, asking me why I was speaking to her, without first hearing my account of the situation. The matter then escalated publicly on the supermarket floor rather than being handled privately and professionally in an office setting. When I later approached both the sub-manager and the general manager to explain the full context—including the prior incidents—they allowed the employee to join the discussion, further turning the situation into a public scene rather than resolving it discreetly.
The handling of this situation was unprofessional at multiple levels:
• Dismissive and disrespectful behavior from a staff member toward a customer.
• Refusal of the employee to identify herself.
• Management failing to hear the customer’s account before forming conclusions.
• Escalating the matter publicly instead of resolving it privately and professionally.
This experience reflects a troubling customer service culture at this location. As a loyal and consistent customer, I expect basic professionalism, courtesy, and accountability.
I intend to escalate this matter to the highest level within the organization, including headquarters in Trinidad, as this issue extends beyond a single employee and reflects a broader management failure.
I respectfully request that this matter be investigated and that appropriate corrective action be taken to ensure customers are treated with professionalism and respect.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Sincerely,
Regular Customer

Very nice and friendly workers in the market. Prices are almost the same as in the US because most items are imported from the US or Britain or other countries. That means groceries are expensive in Barbados. One would wonder how the locals will make it in their daily lives. Lots of fruits and vegetables can be easily grown on the island.

The major Supermarket chain on island. With outlets in Warrens, Oistins and here in Holetown. Along with ample parking a Starbucks and a recycling center out back, you can get a wide range of English and North American food brands. Local food is also available. The store is very popular with visitors.
