We were on a cruise and one of our stops was at Antigua. We had an island tour and our first stop was at The Blockhouse. The Blockhouse and its cannon were part of the defensive system of Antigua built and manned by the British. The Blockhouse cannon protected the back of the Royal Navy's Nelson Dockyard from being attacked on the landward side and it gave warnings of attacking naval forces going around the southern part of the island heading towards the naval dockyard.

Greatly appreciate our taxi driver taking us out here as we watched some cars bypass it completely. Excellent overlook and view point not to be missed.

Perched high above the coastline, this old fort/garrison site gives you a sweeping look over the southeastern side of Antigua—dramatic cliffs, blue water, and that “edge of the island” feeling you don’t quite get down at sea level.  What stands out: • Views: Wide open, windy, and seriously photogenic. Great stop if you’re already visiting Nelson’s Dockyard / Shirley Heights and want one more overlook.  • History: Crumbling walls, foundations, and old structures that hint at its past as a British military outpost. You can wander around and imagine what this place looked like when it was watching over the bay.  • Atmosphere: Much calmer than the big-name lookouts. It feels more like a quiet, windy pause than a crowded attraction. Good to know: • Roads and paths can be a bit rough and uneven—wear decent shoes.  • There isn’t a ton of “stuff to do” here beyond walk, look, and take pictures, so plan this as a short scenic/historic stop, not a half-day excursion.  If you’re already exploring the area, adding The Blockhouse to your route is an easy “yes.” It’s one of those places where you don’t stay long, but you definitely remember the view.

Since we came during a week day, technically, we were the only ones there. I do not recommend buying the tickets in advance, but it is always a good idea just to be safe, and that's just with everything. The views of this place were breathtaking and all the history, too. I always find amazing structures built years ago last more than the ones built nowadays. It's definitely worth the trip. The views leading here were very beautiful. Lots of green and fresh air unless you encounter road kill 🤢
