Came to Barbados for 2 weeks. Stayed 2 1/2 months. Cleared in and out if Barbados at Bridgetown Port. Only charge for myself and yacht was 100BBD.......approx £40. From the Security to Health Officials, Immigration and Customs, all very polite and friendly making the paperwork, which can be a headache, a very pleasant experience.

Little old British lady mowed down in Barbados – who cares? Two years ago today an 87 year old great grandmother, Janet Purkess, was run over and killed in Barbados by a guy without a licence reversing a 10 wheel crane truck at speed. He had been refuelling the Saga Sapphire, a cruise ship that had docked in Bridgetown port earlier in the morning. So what? Let’s face it, these things happen, and she probably only had a few years left anyway – who cares? I DO She was my mum, and it was a tragedy that should never have happened, but can I get justice? Can I hell – no-one is listening. Why did Saga allow an elderly lady to disembark the ship alone when they knew there was a large crane truck refuelling the ship in the immediate vicinity? Why was there no security at the ship? Why did the Barbados port authorities allow an unlicenced driver to operate a 10 wheel crane truck without an assistant, without blind spot monitors, beacons or an audible alarm – where was their due diligence? Why has the driver not been held to account and is still walking (and probably driving) around? Why did the police take over a year to produce a 2 page report full of mistakes and inaccuracies? Why was the driver not breathalysed or drug tested? Why is there no CCTV footage? Why did the Health & Safety Executive not investigate? I could go on (and on) but like I said before no-one is listening or cares. Mum was nobody special, just a little old lady in the wrong place at the wrong time. Would it have been the same if it had been a Barbados citizen or a VIP in the same circumstances? Of course not. Mum was survived by 3 sons, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who miss her dearly. Rest in Peace.
