George Washington House

George Washington House in Barbados is a historic house where the future first U.S. President Goerge Washington stayed for two months in this historic plantation house, also known as Bush Hill House 1751.

He was 19 years old at the time and traveling with his half-brother, Lawrence Washington, who was suffering from tuberculosis. George Washington contracted small pox during his stay, and was nursed back to health at the house. Bush Hill House, where he lived in Barbados was apparently the only house in the country that George Washington ever visited outside of the continental United States.

Tunnels accessible only from George Washington House and Museum, were re-discovered purely by chance in June 2011. Originally constructed to provide drainage to the area (the first of its kind in Barbados) during the 1820’s.  This soon to be 200 years old system includes at least 9 tunnels in the Savannah area along with others. Oral history indicates that should the area have ever been invaded, they were ulatised as ‘escape routes’ for the Garrison troops,  as well as other clandestine purposes.

Our visit to George Washington House was an amazing experience from start to finish. The house itself is beautifully preserved and thoughtfully interpreted, offering such a fascinating glimpse into the time George Washington spent in Barbados. Walking through the rooms and learning about that chapter of history was both educational and memorable. The exhibits are well done and really help bring the story to life. One of the most unique parts of the experience is exploring the underground tunnels. If you’re claustrophobic, you may want to skip that portion — they are narrow in spots — but overall they were such a cool and unexpected feature. Even the tunnels added to the sense of adventure and history. Honestly, the only thing we wished is that more of the tunnel system was open to the public because it’s such a fascinating element of the site. All in all, this is absolutely worth visiting. Historic, immersive, and incredibly well done — a highlight of our time in Barbados.

It is too expensive to get in, but was still worth visiting especially jf you’re interested in US history. I recommend starting from the 15 minute movie then making your way to the house with the audio guide. The tunnel was very interesting if you’re mot claustrophobic. The house itself is slightly underwhelming.

We came because our other tour canceled. This was not on our radar before. But we're so glad we found it! Beautiful grounds, informative history. Who knew Barbados played such a big part in our country's history?!? Don't skip the tunnel. It looks scary, but fine once you're in it. And the little cafe attached is also great for lunch. Such a fun gem we discovered!

When in Barbados, It would be great if you could vist the George Washington House , part of the World Heritage sites where you can learn the connection of the hero of the American Revolution with this amazing island. Take your time to learn history with a short docu film and have your picture taken with George Washington statue. In particular , the 1 km tunnel at this British Garrison will amaze you. Highly recommended

An excellent experience. So much to take in, to do it justice you should give yourself 2-3 hours. The audio guide makes it a pleasurable experience with all the history it contains.
