We had a great experience on the ferry from Gustavia, St. Barth to Philipsburg, St. Maarten! The ride with Great Bay Express was smooth and scenic—such a relaxing way to end our time in St. Barth. Although the day was a bit overcast, the sea was calm with minimal waves, making for a comfortable journey.
The check-in and boarding process was surprisingly easy, and I wanted to share some insight for anyone who might be unsure about how it all works. With just a little preparation, everything goes smoothly. We arrived at 730am which was an hour before 830am departure. With prepurchased ticket vouchers (from StMartinBookings.com and as of 06/24/2025 it cost $75 U.S. per person which did include all fees... the departure tax/port fee) and passports in hand, we were ready for our 45 minute journey to the island of St Martin/Marteen. Parking in early morning Gustavia was convenient and located right next to the ferry terminal—no hassle at all. We let the Gustavia rental company staff know via email when and where the vehicle was parked so that *they* could pick it up at their convenience (the rental office didn't open until 800am).
The ferry staff were friendly, professional, and spoke English, which made communication simple. Contrary to some of the negative reviews we had read, everyone we encountered was courteous and easy to work with.
If you're considering taking the ferry, do it! It's not just a way to get from point A to point B—it’s a scenic and enjoyable part of the travel experience.

Well organised trip to an Eco Hotel.
Location beautiful. Food left a lot to be desired as catering is outsourced and doesn't compliment the facility.

Great location, sometimes rude personal, maybe a French thing. Otherwise we enjoyed the place

There was a service dog at the Voyager counter, and apparently a sign that said not to take pictures—which we honestly missed. Like any other tourists, we started taking pictures of the dog because it was so cute. Unfortunately, we regretted it immediately. As soon as we took the photo, a lady came out yelling at us. We were shocked and completely confused. Where we come from, there are crimes like everywhere else, but taking a picture of a dog is certainly not one of them.
She was screaming and demanding that we delete the photos, even taking our phones to make sure there were none left. We apologized multiple times, but nothing seemed to calm her down. It was one of the most awful experiences we’ve ever had as tourists and completely ruined our time in St. Barth.
I understand that when visiting another country you need to respect the rules, no matter how unusual they may seem. But there are far better ways to correct tourists than by creating such a terrible scene.
