I’m Standing Where My History Was Written,
Where My History Was Influenced.
I’m standing on the volcanic soil of Barbados, piecing together history that runs through my veins in ways they cannot fully know.
Great Rum & delicious Cutter Sandwiches ...But beneath the tourist-friendly distilleries lies something that stops me cold: my k-12 school was born here-influenced here. 🇧🇧
William Penn Charter School, founded in 1689, has roots that tunnel back to this British island where Quakers first landed between 1640and 1660. They came seeking religious freedom. What they did next changed everything.
Here, on this same ground, Quakers planted the earliest seeds of American abolitionism—teaching enslaved people to read, giving them religious instruction, treating them as human souls. Radical acts. Dangerous acts. In 1661, King James II wasn’t having it. His proclamation prohibited “unlawful and seditious meetings and conventicles under the pretense of Religious Worship.” The message was clear: stop, or else.
So they fled. Persecuted for their conscience, they sailed north toward what would become Pennsylvania—45,000 square miles granted to fellow Quaker William Penn by King Charles II in 1681. They built schools. They built communities. They built the institution that would, centuries later, educate me.
I trace the line with my finger on an invisible map: from this island to Philadelphia, from persecution to sanctuary, from enslaved ancestors to me—standing here, the beneficiary, the living proof that their defiance mattered.
I am moved beyond words. 🥹
I am the circle, closed.

This burial ground has been and continues to be quite the place of interest. The Barbados Future Centre Trust is responsible for its restoration and upkeep. It's very close to my home!
